Legibility and Readability of Display Type

Legibility versus readability in display lettering: letter distinction, size thresholds, spacing, contrast ratios and the accessibility criteria that apply on screen.

Legibility and readability are different properties and are improved by different means. Legibility is whether an individual character can be identified: can this shape be told apart from every other shape in the alphabet, quickly and under adverse conditions? Readability is whether a body of text can be read comfortably at length, which depends on spacing, line length, contrast and rhythm at least as much as on the letters themselves.

Display lettering is almost entirely a legibility problem. Nobody reads a masthead at length; they identify it in a fraction of a second, often at small size, often in peripheral vision, often on a background it was not designed for. Dialogue lettering, by contrast, is a readability problem despite being set in short bursts, because a reader processes several hundred balloons across an issue.

What makes an individual letter identifiable

Character identification relies on distinguishing features rather than on overall shape. Four properties do most of the work.

  • Aperture. Open apertures preserve the difference between c and o, e and a, and s and 8 when strokes thicken through ink spread or antialiasing. Closed apertures are the first thing to fail at small size.
  • Distinctive skeletons. Certain groups are inherently confusable: capital I, lowercase l and numeral 1; capital O and numeral 0; r followed by n against m. A face intended for hard conditions differentiates these deliberately — a tail on the l, a spur on the 1, a narrower r. In all-capital comics lettering this is the specific problem the crossbar-I convention solves, as described under lettering fonts.
  • Adequate counters. A counter that closes up under reproduction turns e into a solid blob indistinguishable from o or c. Heavy weights and small sizes are where this bites.
  • Moderate contrast. Hairlines disappear at small sizes and on coarse output; a letter missing its thin strokes is a different letter.

Size thresholds

Legibility is a function of angular size at the eye, not of physical size, so any threshold has to specify a viewing distance. A common working reference is that characters subtending roughly 20 to 22 minutes of arc are read comfortably by most adults, which at a normal reading distance of around 40 centimetres corresponds to lowercase letters with an x-height in the region of 2 millimetres — broadly the size of ordinary book text.

Comics lettering has traditionally been set slightly larger than book text relative to the printed page, partly because all-capital setting has no x-height advantage and partly because reproduction on newsprint was coarse. The critical modern variable is scale of delivery: a page designed for a printed height of around 260 millimetres and viewed on a phone at 130 millimetres is being read at half its intended size, halving the angular size of every letter. Lettering that is comfortable in print can land below threshold on a small screen, which is one of the decisions the digital lettering workflow has to make explicitly.

Spacing, line length and rhythm

Even spacing matters more than the absolute amount. The eye detects irregularity in the rhythm of letter spacing very readily and reads it as a defect even when it cannot locate the cause; a single loose pair in a word draws attention out of proportion to its size. This is why kerning corrections in display work are large and numerous compared with text work.

Tracking behaves inversely to size. Large display settings usually need tighter tracking than the same face set small, because letter spacing scales linearly with size while the perceptual requirement does not. All-capital settings are the exception: capitals were designed to sit beside lowercase, not beside each other, so an all-capital line generally needs to be tracked open by a few per cent to avoid looking congested.

Line length governs readability directly. The conventional target for continuous prose is roughly 45 to 75 characters per line, below which the eye returns too often and above which it loses the start of the next line. Balloon text sits far below that range by necessity, at perhaps 15 to 30 characters, which is workable only because the passages are short and because line breaks can be chosen for phrasing. A caption box running many short lines is the place where this cost becomes visible, and the usual remedy is a wider box rather than smaller text.

Contrast, colour and measurable criteria

Contrast between text and background is the one aspect of legibility with widely agreed numerical thresholds. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 set a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text, with an enhanced level of 7:1 and 4.5:1 respectively. Those thresholds apply to web content rather than to print, but the underlying perceptual research applies to both, and they are the most defensible numbers available when a colour choice has to be justified.

Two further points follow from the same body of work. Colour must never be the sole carrier of meaning, since a distinction visible only as hue is unavailable to a substantial share of readers — relevant wherever a colour-coded caption or balloon system is used, and a reason to pair colour coding with a shape difference as described under word balloons. And text must survive resizing: content that breaks when text is enlarged fails the criterion even if it reads perfectly at default size.

Reversed text — light on dark — needs specific handling. Optical spread makes light letters on a dark ground appear heavier than the same letters printed dark on light, so a face reversed out at text size usually needs a lighter weight or slightly more tracking to hold the same colour. This is a drawing correction, not a preference.

The trade-off nobody escapes

Maximum legibility and maximum character are opposed. The most legible possible letterform is a plain, open, moderate-contrast, unremarkable one — and an unremarkable masthead fails at its actual job, which is being recognised among competitors. The craft judgement is how much identification cost a distinctive drawing is worth, and the answer differs by element: dialogue lettering should spend almost nothing, a masthead can spend a great deal, and sound effects sit between, since they only need to be identified rather than read.
